Interpreting is distinct from translation in that it is spoken, not written. There are a number of different kinds of interpreting:

Simultaneous Interpreting:   Used mostly for conferences, depositions and meetings, the speaker's words are interpreted at the same time he or she is speaking. If the speaker is at a conference, equipment is used to create minimal distraction and the interpreters work in a soundproof booth. Multiple interpreters are used in shifts depending on the length of the speaker's presentation.

Simultaneous interpretation is used during meetings where time is of the essence. Hearing the speaker's words in real-time allows for smooth and fast communication, allowing both parties to continue speaking at a normal pace.

The clear advantage of simultaneous interpretation is the speed at which the words are repeated. Since the interpreter is talking over the speaker, sometimes this takes a little getting used to.

Consecutive Interpreting:   Typically used for (but not limited to) meetings and business negotiations, one interpreter will repeat the speaker's words. The speaker pauses after several sentences, allowing the interpreter to repeat what has been said. The interpreter is visibly present, seated where everyone can see him or her and becomes an integral part of the discussion. Amelise will send interpreters who will provide seamless communication between the spoken languages.

Consecutive interpretation allows for each party to complete their thoughts and sentences before the interpreter repeats what is said. There is no interruption of the speaker and each person's voice is heard clearly. As the interpreter does not begin speaking until someone has finished, there is a time lag before the audience hears what is said.

Kaizen Interpreting:   Unique in the variety of skills expected of the interpreter, Kaizen interpretation offers multiple options for the client. In most cases, the interpreter uses simultaneous whisper interpretation from the target language into Japanese, and consecutive interpretation from Japanese into the target language. This is so the client can clearly hear the words of the Japanese consultant spoken through the interpreter. Equipment is not used, because the interpreter always accompanies the consultant and participants, whether it be in the conference room or on the shop floor.

Escort Interpreting:   Usually combines simultaneous and consecutive and can be tailored to the client's needs. Most often, clients ask for an escort interpreter to accompany them to conferences, trade shows, or presentations where they wish to understand the speaker's words but do not intend to speak themselves. Interpreters may travel with the client to multiple locations depending on the client's needs. Equipment is not used.
